“Reading maketh a full man and writing an exact man.” For both reading and writing, our library resources are abundant and very much relevant. The college library is accommodated in a spacious separate floor. It has an air-conditioned reading room with more than 65000 books in stock in addition to books available in the department libraries. The regular subscription of 21 Indian journals adds to the stock of the central and departmental libraries.

Role of Library Advisory Committee
The advisory committee of the library is comprised of the principal, librarian, and faculty representation of one each from the science and humanities streams. The committee allocates funds to various departments from a state government funds to autonomous and UGC funds. The committee makes suggestions to make the library, an easily accessible source of knowledge for all kinds of students. The committee approves the steps taken to enhance the facilities of the library.

Overview of the Library

The Library has a wide collection of 76,000 Books / Ready reference collections like, Encyclopaedias, Yearbooks, Handbooks, Almanacs, Dictionaries, and Thesaurus, etc. Apart from books 5 Newspapers and 25 Periodicals are subscribed. 163 CD’s and DVD’s, Theses and Dissertations, Old and Revised Syllabi, and Question Banks, etc. are updated. SMGAC Central Library has a separate collection for students who prepare for competitive examinations like Civil Service Examinations, Bank and Railway Competitive Examinations, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET), Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), Teachers’ Recruitment Board Examination (TRB), National Eligibility Test for Lectureship (CSIR/UGC NET), State Eligibility Test for Lectureship (SET), etc. are available in the library. Apart from the main Central Library, there are 15 Department Libraries (Tamil, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Applications, Botany, Zoology, Geography, Home Science, Economics, History, Commerce, and Business Administration) to facilitate reading within the departments under the guidance of Faculty members.

“User Orientation” Programme given to the First Year UG / PG Students every year to know about the facilities and services available in the Library. Students are allowed to retain their borrowed books for semester Examinations. Approximately 4000 users who are visited/consulted the Central Library per semester.

DDC – Dewey Decimal Classification method is followed to classify and arrange books on the shelves.

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) is an online database of all of the resources held in the library. Dedicated Static IP address used for accessing OPAC, Dspace@SMGAC, smgacw.irins.org, etc., Our library Static IP address is 117.200.78.30:5000(Intranet Access 192.168.1.30:5000) (Internet Access 117.200.78.30:5000). Users can search OPAC to locate books in the library. It lists the number of the items, whether they are in the library or checked out on loan. The search for a document through OPAC is very easy if the name of the author/title/call number is known to the user. Keyword searching has the flexibility to allow the user to create simple searches.

E-GATE SYSTEM Gate Register kept at the entrance of the library. Students and Staff should sign in at the register while entering into the library and out from the library. This method is changed and system-based accessibility (E-GATE SYSTEM) was introduced in the academic year 2018-19.

NLIST : Membership with “National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)” for accessing E-Journals and E-Books. More than 3500 students and all faculty members are registered with N-LIST and separate usernames & passwords are assigned to all users. Our Central Library is membership of INFLIBNET- N-LIST from 2014-15 to till date.

IRINS is web-based Research Information Management (RIM) service developed by the Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre. It has integrated with academic identities such as ORCID ID, ScopusID, Research ID, Microsoft Academic ID, and Google Scholar ID for ingesting scholarly publications from various sources. Librarian takes initiative steps to collect academic identity from our Faculty Members and uploaded it to the IRINS website. IRINS provides facilities to access our college profile through https://smgacw.irins.org

DIGITAL LIBRARY :
Digital Library is functioning in the Central Library which facilitates access to electronic resources of INFLIBNET N-List and Open Educational Resources. 21 computers with Internet and Wi-Fi facility help the Students and Staff to access the electronic resources.
