Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women was established in the year 1965, in the temple city, Madurai, by the Government of Tamil Nadu in a sprawling campus of 20 acres to fulfil the need for upliftment of women, in and around Madurai with 320 students and 13 teaching and 13 non-teaching staff members. The college has been upgraded to Grade-I status, and the college has been placed as one among the 14 Grade-I colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. The autonomous status was conferred on 6th October 1998 and the institution continues to spread its branches far and wide, yielding a rich harvest of academic excellence. The college has grown in status, having on its rolls, 3639 students, 150 teachings and 43 non-teaching staff, at present. There are 13 Under Graduate and seven Post Graduate courses offered now. Our College is one among the six Government colleges where the Satellite Interactive Remote Terminal has been Installed.
Goals and Objectives
“To strive, to seek and not to yield” — Strive hard, seek knowledge and do not yield to temptation—the goal of the college is to cater to the higher education needs of the lower middle class and economically backward sections of women in and around Madurai.
“Service for the cause of Women Empowerment” is the objective of the college.
To uplift the socially backward and economically poor young women of the society and empower them by imparting knowledge through holistic education, making them independent and responsible citizens to contribute to the development of the society.
