Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women was established by the government of Tamilnadu in the temple city of Madurai in the year 1965, to fulfill the need for upliftment of women in and around Madurai. Set in a sprawling campus of 16 acres, the college began its journey with 320 students and 13 teaching and 13 non-teaching staff members. Today, the college stands upgraded to Grade-I status, and is well placed among the 14 Grade-I colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. Autonomy status was conferred upon it on 6th October 1998 and the institution continues to grow from strength to strength, reaching out far and wide to young women thirsting for empowerment through education. The college has since grown in stature, having on its roll, 4913 students, 150 teaching and 43 non-teaching staff, at present. There are 15 under graduate and 15 post graduate courses offered now. Our College is one among the six government colleges where the Satellite Interactive Remote Terminal has been Installed.

“To strive, to seek and not to yield” — Strive hard, seek knowledge and do not yield to temptation—the goal of the college is to cater to the higher education needs of the lower middle class and economically backward sections of women in and around Madurai.
“Service for the cause of Women Empowerment” is the objective of the college.

To uplift the socially backward and economically poor young women of the society and empower them by imparting knowledge through holistic education, making them independent and responsible citizens to contribute to the development of the society.
