Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women was established by the government of Tamilnadu in the temple city of Madurai in the year 1965, to fulfill the need for upliftment of women in and around Madurai. Set in a sprawling campus of 20 acres, the college began its journey with 320 students and 13 teaching and 13 non-teaching staff members. Today, the college stands upgraded to Grade-I status, and is well placed among the 14 Grade-I colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu. Autonomy status was conferred upon it on 6th October 1998 and the institution continues to grow from strength to strength, reaching out far and wide to young women thirsting for empowerment through education.

Sri Meenakshi Govt., Arts College for Women (A), Madurai is a reputed Women Institution, located on the bank of the historic river Vaigai, in Madurai was started in 1965 with 320 students, 13 faculty members, and 13 non-teaching staff. The college was founded with the exclusive aim of the upliftment of the status of women in and around Madurai. Over the years, the college has carved a unique imprint of an institution nurturing young minds with immense knowledge, core values and appropriate attitudes.
