Department of Economics
The Department of Economics came in to being as a distinct unit in 1966-67. The Department started UG Course in 1966-67, Post-Graduate Course in 1975-76 and M.Phil in 2013-14.The Department of Economics is one of the oldest of the Departments in the college and it has made a qualitative contribution to research and under and post graduate education in Economics since its initiation. The diversity of specialization of the departmental faculty has promoted multi-faceted development of the students and has brought a certain depth to the PG and M.Phil courses as well. Every year we get an overwhelming response for all courses from all across the state. The department’s course offerings are broad and providing opportunity for the students enrolling higher studies in other educational institutions, along with personalized attention that is the hall mark of the department. At present there are ten faculty members, out of which 8 members are Ph.D holders. The department has a well equipped computer laboratory with internet facility, smart board facility, and Xerox facility. The Department library has good collection of reference books, text books, journals, RBI reports, Ph.D theses and M.Phil theses. In addition to a rigorous curriculum, the department offers a vibrant environment for all round development. Regular meetings are arranged with experts from various fields to introduce latest research findings, analytical tools, and current issues and to build skill needed for career. The department is conducting an Examination called “Know Your Economy” annually in association with Scientific Research Association for Economics and Finance, (SRAEF) Mylapore, Chennai. To inculcate oratorical skill and exposure to recent socio and economic issues, the department is organizing an elocution competition called A.D.SHROFF Memorial Elocution Competition for the students with the sponsorship of the Forum of Free Enterprise, Mumbai.

The Department envisions achieving high standards of academic performance to provide education to students, equip students with knowledge and skill. The department provides opportunities for the students to realize their full potential for employability and to stimulate entrepreneurial skill. The department impart high quality instruction to our under graduate, post graduate students and research scholars to impart the ideas of theoretical and applied economics and methods of research.
