I hope to convey the passion and enthusiasm that both staff and students bring to all that they do here, making Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women(Autonomous) such a wonderful place to learn. Sri Meenakshi Govt., Arts College for Women (A), Madurai is a reputed Women’s Institution, located on the bank of the historic river Vaigai, in Madurai was started in 1965 with 320 students, 13 faculty members, and 13 non-teaching staff. The college was founded with the exclusive aim of upliftment the status of women in and around Madurai. Over the years, the college has carved a unique imprint of an institution nurturing young minds with immense knowledge, core values, and appropriate attitudes.

The UGC committee for the conferment of extension of autonomous status visited the college during April-2014 and granted an extension of autonomous for a period of SIX years with effect from the academic year 2014-2015 to 2019-2020. The peer team of Accreditation Committee (NAAC) visited our College during May 2014 for 3rd cycle reaccreditation and accredited our college with CGPA of 3.07 on a four-point scale at “A” Grade up to July 2019. Our curriculum reflects the vision and mission of the institution and is in line with societal needs. It is updated by subject experts and board of studies members and approved by Academic council with CBCS following the guidelines of UGC and TASCHE. Admissions are transparent and merit-based focused on the lower strata of society. The number of faculty members with Ph.D. qualification and several pursuing Ph.D. Many faculty have availed of their FIP and many are Research guides. Our faculty members received UGC funded minor and major research projects. Faculty have received many awards. Several publications in peer-reviewed journals published Books and Chapters in Books.

The clear vision and mission of our college are oriented to the disadvantaged. Our college is providing remedial coaching, entry into service and SLET/NET coaching which have ensured the development of a collaborative environment conducive to learning, exposure to the best practices and promotion of innovations and creativity. Our college is offering a certificate course and diploma course in Gandhian thought with affiliation to Kamaraj University. Our college is one among the two colleges selected for providing free coaching for UPSC Civil Service Preliminary Examinations by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. The college has engaged in resourceful research activities through funded research projects and conduct of conferences, seminars and workshops. Our alumnae have found places in great institutions and reputed companies significantly contributing to society. Our college is emerging as a potential club to impart education, training and entrepreneurship development skills to the women who are marginalized section of society in the backward region of Madurai and adjoining districts of Madurai. It caters to the first generation socially and economically disadvantaged women. It is a multi-faculty institution under autonomous status offering a wide verity of undergraduate postgraduate and Research program. It is playing an important role in the cause of women empowerment with value-based education and an affordable fee structure. Committed faculty and affordable fees structure enables disadvantaged women to gain higher education. Our college faculty members are mentors and have a good relationship with alumni and the target community.

Our institution has further planned to expand its course domain and enhance its infrastructural facilities. With the significant status and the positive reputation achieved so far at the state level, our responsibilities and expectation from us have increased but I am confident that our college with much excellent track record will enhance the performance levels to attain greater glories.
